Neurophysiology

My name is Dr Simon Taggart and I am a Consultant in Clinical Neurophysiology. I work from the James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough where I see NHS, private and medicolegal cases. I gained a research degree while an undergraduate medical student at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne (BMedSci(Hons)) in 1992 and gained my medical degrees (MBBS) from the same university in 1993. I then underwent training as a physician and obtained membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP(UK)) in 1997. I undertook higher medical training in the specialty of Clinical Neurophysiology and was entered on the General Medical Council Specialist Register in November 2002. I took up my current post on December 1st 2002 and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 2007. I am a member of the British Society for Clinical Neurophysiology.

Much of my work as a clinical neurophysiologist involves working closely with hand and arm surgeons in the diagnosis of common upper limb nerve disorders such as carpal tunnel syndrome and ulnar neuropathy but also in the diagnosis of less common nerve disorders and complex traumatic nerve injuries.

My work will sometimes involve me advising legal teams on the presence and extent of peripheral nerve injuries.
