What is a Hand Surgeon?

When a problem takes place in the hand, treatment must be given to all the different types of tissues that make function of the hand possible. Hand surgeons are specifically trained to give that care which may involve surgical or non-surgical treatments.

In the UK,  Hand Surgeons are Orthopaedic or Plastic Surgeons. The majority of hand surgeons who solely specialize in Hand Surgery have done additional training in a recognized Hand Fellowship Program of between 6 months to 2 years. The British Society for Surgery of the Hand (BSSH) lists all properly trained Hand Surgeons in the UK. Many hand surgeons are also experts in diagnosing and caring for shoulder and elbow problems.

The proper practice of Hand Surgery requires not only a properly trained Hand Surgeon but also a team of Hand Therapists, Anaesthetists and experienced Nurses. In addition, other Medical Specialists such as Radiologists, Neurophysiologists, Rheumatologists, Neurologists may be involved in the investigation and care of a Hand Condition.
